Learning Outcomes
Outcome 1: Following the completion of the first pilot at sites Naval Medical Center (NMC) San Diego and Naval Medical Center (NMC) Portsmouth, there was a clear scarcity in the exposure to trauma related patients in the MTFs versus the civilian trauma centers.

Outcome 2: The MTFs showed a propensity for routine care patients though still lacked behind the civilian medical facilities in overall exposure to routine care.

Outcome 3: Students at civilian Level 1 Trauma sites treated an average of 304 external hemorrhage and an average of 50 internal hemorrhage patients compared to students at MTF sites who treated an average of 46 external hemorrhage patients and an average of 2 internal hemorrhage patients over the 7 week course.

Description
Hospital Corpsmen (HMs) assigned to military treatment facilities (MTFs) lack routine exposure to high acuity patients. Some HMs are stationed in non-clinical roles, limiting their opportunities to gain essential patient care experience; these same HMs will have follow on assignments to operational units. This overall scarcity of exposure to the full spectrum of trauma cases within MTFs contributes to a potential deficit in HMs' readiness to care for critically injured patients, as they might encounter on the battlefield or aboard ships. To address this shortfall, the Hospital Corpsman Trauma Training (HMTT) Program was launched as a proof-of-concept in 2017 at Great Lakes, Illinois. Subsequently, it expanded to Jacksonville, Florida (2018); Cleveland, Ohio (2019); and Raleigh, North Carolina (2021). Recognizing the ongoing need for enhanced training, the Navy Surgeon General directed the implementation of an MTF-based pilot of HMTT in 2025, selecting Naval Medical Center (NMC) San Diego and Naval Medical Center (NMC) Portsmouth as the initial locations.
