Born on November 9, 1967, Guillaume de Saint Maurice was trained at the Ecole du service de sante des armees in Lyon and in 1995 obtained a first-class honor degree with distinction for his medical thesis on "The medical support of the United Nations Protection Force in former Yugoslavia".
He initially served as a general practitioner in the 1st Infantry Regiment, then in the General Directorate of the Gendarmerie Nationale. In 2000, he passed the competitive examination for a hospital career in anesthesia and intensive care.
He became a certified practitioner in 2006 and was assigned to the Percy army training hospital (HIA). He holds a master's degree in risk management in health care institutions from the Ecole Centrale Paris (2010).
Laureate of the 2011 competitive examination to become professor at the Val-de-Grace Academy, he is assigned to the Val de Grace army training hospital. The following year, he was appointed head of the anaesthesia, operating theatre and critical care wards, and in 2014 he took part in the transfer of activi­ties to the Percy and Begin hospitals when the Val de Grace hospital was closed.
As head of the same wards back at Percy, he led a reorganization of the operating theatre and critical care units. During the November 2015 Paris attacks, he was the crisis medical director at Percy: he di­rected the teams that took care of 17 injured people. He then participated with his civilian colleagues in the hospital organization work in case of massive shootings. In 2017, he was appointed medical director of the hospital Percy, leading the medical community of the establishment. In 2018, he was called to the Directorate of military hospitals, as head of the hospital policy office and acting deputy director.
On July 1st, 2019, he was given the rank and prerogatives of brigadier general by being appointed chief medical officer of the military teaching hospital Legouest in Metz. In 2020, this hospital contributed to the fight against the COVID for the armed forces and in its territory by taking care of a great number of patients and by organizing a high-capacity vaccination center. During the first wave of the pandemic, which hit hardly the 'Grand-Est' region, the General de Saint Maurice also liaised with the Regional Agency for Health for the engagement of military air vehicles transporting nearly 100 patients of critical care level, under the authority of the general officer commanding the East defense zone.
Professor de Saint Maurice has given courses at Val de Grace academy and at the University of Paris for interns in anesthesia and critical care. Involved in the life of his profession, the French Society of Anes­thesia and Intensive Care entrusted him with the responsibility of the Risk Analysis and Control Commit­tee (2016 - 2018). He also collaborates with the French College of Anesthesia and Intensive Care (accred­itation commission, 2010 - 2018).
On an operational level, he has participated in 4 deploiments (1995, 1998, 2002, 2007), as well as in mul­tiple strategic or tactical MEDEVACs, allowing the transport of 32 critically wounded soldiers from abroad operations in which French armed forces were involved. He has also participated in other oper­ational missions (GIGN, French presidential medical staff) in France and abroad.
Guillaume de Saint Maurice is a Knight of the Legion of Honour (2020), of the National Order of Merit (2010) and of the Order of Academic Palms (2016). He is married and has six children.
He was appointed Director of the Val-de-Grace Academy on 15 July 2021, and promoted to the rank of Major General on July 1st, 2022.
