Description

Introduction: The Global War on Terror resulted in numerous casualties that have offered unique challenges to healthcare professionals. One population, combat amputees, have had a particularly challenging time with respect to their recovery, rehabilitation, and navigating the healthcare systems afforded to them, especially as they transition to the civilian sector. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of the GWOT combat amputees relative to their types of injuries, military occupational specialty, and system of care utilized during their recovery and rehabilitation process. Methods: The authors utilized their veteran connections to recruit combat veterans who sustained injuries during their service during the GWOT that led to limb amputations. Overall, 10 interviews were conducted, lasted for approximately one hour, and followed a semi-structured format. Interviews were recorded, manually transcribed verbatim, and de-identified. Deductive and inductive approaches were employed to identify codes, themes, and meta-themes in the data. Results: The analysis of the transcriptions resulted in three themes: support, systems of care, and mindset. The codes for support were self-care, emotional support, and external support. The codes for systems of care were military systems, veteran’s affairs, private systems, prescriber bias, and acute pain management. The codes for mindset included reenlistment, physical activity, goal setting, and empathy towards the care teams. The three themes synergistically contributed to the meta-themes pain and mental health. Conclusion: Combat amputees face unique challenges in care due to their injuries sustained in combat. Their unique perspectives offer insight in ways to potentially optimize their care in the future.
