#197 - From Science to Practice: A rapid research translation series to facilitate dissemination of research and implementation of evidence-based suicide prevention
Date & Time
Monday, February 12, 2024, 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Description

Suicide is a leading cause of death among U.S. Veterans. While Veteran suicide deaths decreased from 2019 to 2020, despite a Veteran population increase, Veteran suicides are still occurring at a higher rate than non-Veterans (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2022). Preventing suicide among Veterans is a top clinical priority. Timely research translation is essential to suicide prevention, bridging the gap between research and practice. Busy clinicians and other stakeholders in suicide prevention use and rely on research translation and synthesis into education materials. The Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (OHMSP) within the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) has developed the From Science to Practice (FSTP) series to promote the timely dissemination of suicide prevention research findings. This series is designed to translate both foundational and recent literature for a diverse set of clinical and stakeholder audiences working with Veterans who may be at risk for suicide, in alignment with VA’s National Strategy for Preventing Veteran Suicide. Each publication in the series includes a brief, but comprehensive, PDF document and accompanying PowerPoint slide deck that covers a specific aspect of suicide, such as risk and protective factors, co-occurring health issues, the lethality of methods, and treatment modalities. It defines the issue, presents key findings, and provides practical ways clinicians and stakeholder audiences can help Veterans. The production of the FSTP series is an iterative process that requires active collaboration between VA, clinicians, researchers, and subject matter experts. The process of developing and producing these educational materials, including topic identification, literature review, translation of evidence, collaborative review, VA clearance, and updates every 18 to 24 months to include timely and relevant research findings. The FSTP series summarizes the published research on suicide risk and protective factors and provides evidence-informed resources and actions to help providers support Veterans and prevent suicide.
