Description

Through partnerships and modalities, the VHA Office of Nursing Services (ONS) communications team developed a unique concept for Nurses Month 2023. They spearheaded, designed, and deployed an intentional calendar of events to engage, and support Nurses Month 2023. This resulted in historic nursing recognition and engagement. Outcomes include the largest audience in 156 years of VHA nursing for 50+ virtual events, 43,000+ social media impressions, live and interactive seminars, multiple videos, a 600% increase in ONS website traffic including nearly 2,000 views for an evidence-based practice and nursing research poster session. ONS partnered with Federal, public, and private entities including Freedom Sings USA, a nonprofit, film and music industry professionals, community engagement centers, the American Nurses Association, 30 VHA facilities, 80+ presenters, 50+ field staff, and 14 VHA clinical program offices. Efforts yielded a professionally produced music album titled, The Way Back: Songs of Healing by VA Veteran Nurses a documentary film “VA Nurse Veterans Songwriting Retreat”, screening rights to an award-winning feature film “The American Nurse”, and a 17-day virtual Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice poster session. The month’s design leveraged VHA’s mission to foster trust, authenticity, transparency, and inclusivity within VHA care delivery by representing a diverse population across care settings, minorities, genders, Veterans, and staff. This was demonstrated in sessions that included Tuskegee 100th anniversary time capsule review, History of VHA and Nursing, Skin Assessment for People of Color, and Health Outcomes of Military Exposures. A diverse selection of innovative solutions built organizational transparency and promoted a modernized VHA by using platforms like social media, short film, feature film, song writing and presentation sessions which sparked imagination and catalyzed impact and innovation. This also included expressive arts to highlight the importance of dynamic healthcare environments that meet Veterans' and staff evolving needs. The methods also promoted employee well-being and created whole health and High Reliability Organization opportunities designed to support the Reduce Employee Burnout and Optimize Organizational Thriving (REBOOT) program. This resulted in events that sparked advancement in mission-driven care. These included: Mobile Inspiration Station, storytelling, preceptor coaching, and opportunities for VA nurses to share stories of acclaimed outcomes. Examples include Phoenix VA ICU nurses achieving the outcome of zero Catheter-Related-Urinary-Catheter-Infections two years in a row; and VA Houston nurses Press-Ganey recognized efforts to improve quality of life, decreases in: length of stay, worsening outcomes, and costs. Feedback demonstrated nurse sentiment and validated engagement results. One example, “During nurses’ month, I have really felt connected to ONS and the larger nursing community within VHA” demonstrated the impact of sending a strong message of empowerment, autonomy, and improving system communication. These innovative methods serve as best practices to the complex challenge of healthcare staff engagement. The use of multiple media and modalities, both synchronously and asynchronously, provided a variety of options to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse, large, modern workforce. In addition, the partnerships needed to realize such events are a testament to how the Federal, private, and public entities can partner to achieve new outcomes.
