Description

Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB) is a chronic inflammatory condition, primarily seen in men with tightly coiled hair who shave the beard. PFB causes painful, pruritic hyperpigmented papules in the beard area and can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, scarring, keloid formation and disfiguration. PFB is a significant social, administrative, and medical issue amongst military service members who are required to shave daily. While shaving requirements and treatment regimen recommendations have changed over time, there is a paucity of evidence to support those recommendations. Little research has been done to evaluate the efficacy of commonly recommended treatment regimens to ameliorate PFB. This poster aims to highlight the need for further research into the efficacy of treatments for this common condition. The authors are currently conducting a systematic review of treatments for PFB.
