Name
#199 - Sarcoidosis in the Military may be Chronic Beryllium Disease
Date & Time
Monday, February 12, 2024, 12:00 PM
Description

Recent publications reported a higher incidence of sarcoidosis in military personnel than in the general population. Beryllium is used in multiple high tech military applications. Sarcoidosis and beryllium health effects including chronic beryllium disease (CBD) share the same symptoms as pulmonary sarcoidosis, and use of the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT) to correctly identify personnel with CBD to limit further exposures. OSHA mandates the use of the BeLPT in civilian workers occupationally exposed to beryllium. Use of the test in military populations would permit current personnel and veterans to receive an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment and follow-up.
