Name
#168 - Factors impacting Veteran alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic
Date & Time
Monday, February 12, 2024, 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Description

Current research suggests veterans are at greater risk of alcohol use disorder compared to the general population, due in part to pre-existing medical and mental health conditions related to trauma and isolation. The objective of this study is to determine possible risk factors associated with changes in alcohol consumption among veterans receiving outpatient primary care mental health (PCMHI) services based on demographics one year prior to and during the first years of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. A secondary data analysis of 408 veteran electronic medical records (EMR) were reviewed for this study. The main demographic of this study are White, English-speaking males of middle age who served in the Army during the OEF/OIF/OND era. Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test – Consumption (AUDIT-C) scores were not significant when controlling for sex, military branch, period of service, race, age, and new enrollment at VA Bedford. Statistical significance was found between participant mental health diagnosis across AUDIT-C scores in 2019, 2020, and 2021.
