Description

Key Objective: To develop a comprehensive database containing information from the Department of Defense cancer registry and the MDR, called Military Cancer Epidemiology (MilCanEpi). Results: The current version of MilCanEpi includes data on over 130,000 tumors diagnosed among Department of Defense beneficiaries between 1998 and 2014 and is linked to individual’s medical encounter data. The database is hosted on Google Cloud Services and utilizes BigQuery and structured query language (SQL) to process, export, and download data for approved research. Relevance: The MilCanEpi database may be used to study cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up care, co-morbidities, prognosis, and survival in a population with comprehensive health coverage and access to care.

Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the utility of cancer registries and administrative claims data for conducting cancer research and the benefits of linking the two data sources.
2. Describe the basic components of the Military Cancer Epidemiology, MilCanEpi, database and database functionality using Google Big Query.
3. Discuss the uses of MilCanEpi data for research on cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up care, co-morbidities, prognosis, and survival among the active duty servicemember and other DoD beneficiaries.
