#14 - Hypertension in Young Adults in the US Military

Description

All healthcare encounters involving service members aged 18-39 years were evaluated for instances of hypertension bases on the American Heart Association classification. A total of 23,448,198 encounters were evaluated from 1,992,393 unique individuals within the Military Health System from 2016-2022. In 2016, 34.3% of all service members met diagnostic criteria for Class 1 or Class 2 hypertension, which increased to 39.1% by 2022. Increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure was associated with increased body mass index. The number of individuals with hypertensive range blood pressure increased from 34.3% to 39.1%; however, the number of individuals diagnosed with hypertension decreased during the same seven-year period.
