Name
#183 - Optimizing Military Physician Assistant Research: A Deliberate Approach to Digital Knowledge Management
Date & Time
Tuesday, February 13, 2024, 12:00 PM
Description

Conducting military research improves beneficiary outcomes; furthermore, research activities are important for the advancement of any medical field. Research activities teach skills related to reasoning, decision-making, and critical appraisal of professional literature. However, many researchers conduct research with limited time to learn about researching and limited time to conduct research. Students, particularly, spend large amounts of time trying to learn about research, while simultaneously executing their research projects and even conducting their own data analyses. These activities increase the cognitive load of training programs, and competing demands exist for learners between learning clinical skills or conducting research. One barrier for optimizing research is the disparate and disorganized nature of research resources currently available to part-time researchers. The purpose of this project was to curate a digital research resources library for knowledge management that aligned with research goals and objectives in order to decrease the cognitive load of research. The project used Kern’s six-step approach to curriculum development to align resources to research goals. Kern's six-steps are: 1. problem identification and general needs assessment, 2. targeted needs assessment, 3. goals and objectives, 4. educational strategies, 5. implementation, and 6. evaluation and feedback. The digital library was created in Canvas Learning Management System. Canvas pages included links to other research libraries, videos, websites, and documents that described common research concepts. Canvas tools employed also include monitored discussion boards to improve teaching and communication across geographically separate locations. The digital library was distributed first to US Army- Baylor University physician assistant students and then extended to other US Army- Baylor University students. The opportunity to distribute these resources on a platform such as MilSuite was included in the long-term goals for this project. Page usage data and ongoing feedback and contributions will keep the library up-to-date and focused on researcher needs. The hope in creating a digital library of vetted research resources is that the cognitive load of research will decrease, and the quality of research will increase. The platform allows for resource sharing and collaboration which will also increase the quality of research.
