Date & Time

Description

Purpose: The Veteran Administration's (VA) Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) Health Professions Education (HPE) programs play a crucial role in providing top-tier education for health professions trainees (HPT) to address the evolving health care needs of Veterans. While the VA excels in training HPTs, including social work HPTs in Master of Social Work (MSW) affiliate programs (VA hosts 1049 master intern positions), the absence of accreditation standards for post-master’s fellowships has left a gap in oversight. This poster will outline OAA’s collaboration with the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to establish accreditation standards for post-master’s social work clinical fellowships for VA and the nation. Method: In 2019, OAA evaluated the social work portfolio and identified 16 associated health post-master fellowships for social workers that did not have accreditation, leaving them without comprehensive and objective oversite. Recognizing the need for accountability and quality assurance, OAA engaged with CSWE to develop fellowship accreditation standards. Results: After a successful three-year pilot, the standards and accreditation process were officially adopted by CSWE in October 2021. The OAA's Associated Health Education (AHE) portfolio now comprises 16 fellowship positions across 10 VA medical facilities. The initiative has raised awareness and commitment among these facilities to pursue CSWE accreditation for their fellowships, ensuring high-quality clinical training. Conclusion: The OAA's ongoing commitment to excellence is reflected in pursuing accountability through accreditation in post-master’s social work fellowships within the VA. By collaborating with CSWE and instituting accreditation standards, OAA aims to elevate the quality of clinical fellowship training. The goal is to secure CSWE accreditation for all established social work fellowship programs in the VA. In pursuit of this goal, three fellowship programs are working towards full accreditation status by 2027.
