Date & Time

Description

Following one year of formalized training, the Independent Duty Corpsmens’ (IDC) follow on assignments require them to practice medicine away from a supervising physician. The maintenance plan for ensuring their ongoing competency has not been developed. The goal of the project was to create a training curriculum that facilitates the IDCs ability to demonstrate competency on their biannual oral examination by improving their knowledge and confidence. This was accomplished through the delivery of a training curriculum covering 12 content areas over 12 weeks to the eight IDCs attached to Naval Station Rota. A pre and post Likert scale survey was administered to the IDCs to assess their perceived knowledge and comfort with the 12 content areas. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to determine if the pre and post test sets of data differed. A cost analysis was performed to determine the sustainability and replication of the program. Providing ongoing education to the IDCs improved their knowledge and confidence. Following implementation, the IDC’s perceived experience increased by 14% and their comfort level increased by 20%. The Wilcoxon signed rank test demonstrated statistical significance. Overall, the project demonstrated positive benefits to the IDCs education and training. The series is readily reproducible making it a viable option for ongoing training globally.
