•Summarize communication and engagement strategies used by two Federal health care systems to support the spread of high reliability practices and behaviors.
•Describe how two Federal health care systems broadened the sharing of HRO practices, ideas, and resources by providing platforms to connect HRO implementers with system-wide HRO activities.
•Summarize the importance of engaging all members of the workforce to strengthen the application of cultural and operational HRO strategies.
To support both Service Members and Veterans in receiving exceptional health care, the Defense Health Agency (DHA) and the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) each embarked on respective, yet complementary, journeys to become High Reliability Organizations (HROs). Both organizations deployed common strategies to accelerate the adoption and sustainment of HRO behaviors and practices. To support VHA as a learning organization advancing toward becoming an HRO, it is critical to accelerate and deepen high reliability implementation across the health care system. This is done by connecting high reliability leaders, implementers, and front-line staff members to share successes and failures within an environment of psychological safety to model transformational culture change and facilitate learning and improvement. VHA’s enterprise-wide path to HRO starts with leadership engagement across all VHA organizations to foster a Culture of Safety that empowers front line teams and provides reliably safe care for our Nation’s Veterans. Likewise, after a review of the Military Health System’s performance in 2014, DHA took specific action to improve health care access, quality, safety, transparency, and patient engagement. In partnership with the Service Medical Departments, DHA continues to standardize and spread these efforts by applying a coordinated approach, in partnership with the Service Medical Departments to HRO transformation under the Ready Reliable Care (RRC) brand. RRC spans clinical and non-clinical settings to drive better outcomes for patients, staff members, and the enterprise. Both organizations deployed common strategies to accelerate the adoption and sustainment of HRO behaviors and practices. The aim of this poster is to share aligned strategic communication initiatives that have supported each system’s integration of high reliability, with a focus on engaging and educating the workforce.
