Description
In 2019, the VHA National Capital Region (VISN5 DC, Maryland and West Virginia) ranked 16th out of 18 networks in terms of employee engagement in their annual survey and its organizational health index. To address this, the network director launched High-Reliability Organization (HRO) and Organizational Development (OD) programs to assess and improve its culture and employee engagement. The programs were aligned with the network director's vision to build the organization's culture gradually, focusing on one employee at a time.As a result of these initiatives, the network has seen significant improvements. It has consistently ranked among the top 5 networks with the highest employee response in the VA's annual employee engagement survey over the past four years.
Additionally, it has been among the top 5 networks with the highest organizational health index for the previous two years. The network has also improved its close calls and sentinel events ratio, as well as its culture of safety scores, indicating that it is moving towards becoming a high-reliability organization.
