Description

This presentation will help educate healthcare professionals about how in-situ simulation can be used in dentistry. The importance of developing DoD and VA dental professionals to help educate their own dental teams will be explored. Will highlight examples of these concepts, the benefits obtained, and lessons learned. The purpose is to increase the use of simulation in dentistry, the development of dental simulation champions, and enhance collaborations with other healthcare professions. The benefits of in-situ simulation are increased teamwork and staff buy-in, improved closed-loop communication, emergency preparedness, as well as, systems and process improvement within the dental clinic and the larger healthcare facility. Other benefits include interprofessional collaboration with other healthcare and simulation professionals and professional development of staff as simulation champions and educators. The presentation will include a description of the types of in-situ simulation content delivered at VA and DoD facilities. These concepts will be illustrated using examples of dental professionals, including dentists and dental hygienists, who have become simulation champions for their dental clinics. Their experiences will outline how this has led to improvements in their teams and clinics, as well as, increased leadership roles helping train their teams. Will describe the professional development opportunities dental professionals have in relation to simulation-based education and what has been learned from these experiences.
