Description
Burnout and feeling disconnected from others are significant issues within military healthcare. Military hospitals have diverse resources, committees, and associations that can allow staff members to feel more connected. However, staff members may lack the knowledge of what resources are available and the time to learn. U.S. Naval Hospital Guam created the Strategic Pauses to address these issues. Strategic Pauses are events where all staff members are encouraged to take a break from their daily activities, come to a central meeting place at any time during the events, and learn about resources and hospital associations and committees. Providing snacks and games encourages participation. After four Strategic Pauses in the past two years, the overall feedback from staff is that Strategic Pauses are an effective brief intervention to improve short-term feelings of readiness and connectedness. When surveyed during the last two Strategic Pauses, directly before the events, the percent of staff members who felt ready to face the challenges of the day increased from 45% to 80% (242 returned surveys). The Strategic Pause leadership team has created an action plan that could be used as a template for planning that may be applicable to other facilities.
