Description
Our poster will introduce meeting attendees to the Veterans Health Administration’s 2022–32 Nursing Workforce Strategic Plan, a groundbreaking initiative to define and create an industry-leading culture of excellence driven by nurses for nurses. The plan emphasizes excellence through care coordination, American Nurses Credentialing Center’s models (such as the Magnet Recognition and Pathway to Excellence programs), and shared governance—all of which foster a culture of innovation and evidence-based practice. The strategic plan, which the poster will depict graphically, consists of four pillars with specific strategies to ensure a strong nursing workforce to meet the Department of Veterans Affairs’ four statutory missions. The poster will show how the strategic plan is aligned with VHA’s organizational priorities, enablers, whole health principles, and high-reliability organization principles. The poster will summarize VHA’s approach to developing the strategic plan and the long term vision. And the poster will list what VHA has accomplished so far, including the establishment of a project management office to coordinate activities under the strategic plan, the publication of 20+ national products, the development of nurse leader mentorship programs, the appointment of chief nursing officers in all 18 regional offices, and the hosting of a national community of practice call. This approach highlights how a well-defined and effectively implemented nursing workforce plan can transform health care delivery, achieve organizational success, and set a new standard for industry-leading practices through evidence-based practices and whole health/wellness initiatives. The strategic plan continues to evolve, expanding opportunities, and ensuring that every level of the organization is empowered to contribute to a culture of innovation and excellence.
