Col Frank Y. Yang is State Air Surgeon, Virginia Air National Guard (VaANG), Joint Force Headquarters, Richmond, Virginia. He is medical waiver authority and provides oversight on professional aspects of all medical forces in VaANG, coordinates jointly with Va Army National Guard Medical Command and liaisons with National Guard Bureau (NGB) on all matters affecting medical force manning and development.
The colonel joined the Air National Guard by direct commissioning from citizen to airman in June 1999. He graduated Air Force Aerospace Medicine course in May 2022. Over his 25 years of continuous military service, Col Yang has served in all positions available to a physician in a medical group, including Chief of Professional Services, Chief of Aerospace Medicine, Leader of CBRN Enhanced Response Force, Surgeon, and Chief of Medical Staff. Prior to his current assignment, the colonel was Commander, 192 Medical Group, VaANG, Langley AFB, Virginia.
Col Yang’s other notable assignments include Air National Guard Assistant to Command Surgeon Pacific Air Forces and 7th Air Force Surgeon-General-Forward, Korea, where he successfully navigated a Joint, inter-agency and international arena. He also served as Joint Medical Officer at NGB Joint Surgeon Directorate, and as Flight Surgeon to Chief, NGB. Other assignments included Lead Educator for Air Force Medical Command’s Integrated Disability Evaluation System and Co-lead for Air Force Surgeon General’s Lifestyle and Performance Medicine working group.
The colonel’s Joint, inter-agency and international assignments also included special assistant to US Embassy in Tajikistan and nation-building missions in Romania and Bulgaria, while partnering with Greece, Turkey, Poland, Hungary, Macedonia and Slovenia. He also led as the Inaugural Leader of the Medical Thread of Bold Quest, a US Joint Staff all-domain command/control, capabilities demonstration of innovative technologies and interoperability development between US Joint Forces and multiple Partner Nations.
