Description

The word fire in any healthcare setting can cause feelings of anxiety not only for the patients and caregivers, but hospital staff as well. It is critical our healthcare teams prepare for these events to mitigate imminent safety risks and potential injuries for all involved. Reviewing a safety plan in a manual or a wall plaque is not enough to ensure staff are competent in reacting to disaster emergencies. A safety gap was identified within our facility addressing evacuation of bariatric patients from higher floor levels during a fire emergency. Lin & Zhou (2024) cited vulnerabilities of elderly populations during fire events, and potential for serious risk they face when admitted to medical buildings. The aim of the project was to assess, if the use of simulation training as a safety tool will improve staff knowledge, confidence and satisfaction during emergency evacuation of bariatric patients at least one stairwell in height.
